NAJA SA Open 2010 Selection Criteria

A review of the existing selection criteria indicates a decline in support at squad trainings and ranking events. The notion that trials is the only important event is detrimental to the promotion of judo in our province. As with international standards, points are accumulated with a greater weighting of points closer to the Olympics. Our National Coach, Alfie Stevenson, recently stated that he was not in favour of trials as it did not reflect the most consistent and best judoka. In view of this the following criteria will be implemented:

  • Judoka must compete in the weight division intended for the SA Championships;
  • Weighting of the points will increase with rankings 4, 5 & 6 as follows:

  • No trials will be held for these positions;
  • Each judoka attending squad training will be awarded 20 points
  • The final calculation of points will determine the placing of judoka for the individual events of SA Open Championships 2010
  • NAJA teams – judoka placed first and second from each group will be invited to fight out for the A & B teams. Where only an A team is to be selected, the number one will be chosen.

It is envisaged that this system will eradicate complacency and create an incentive to promote judo in the province. The increase in participation will benefit our players and teams at the upcoming championships.
