1.                  GRADING SYSTEM
 
1.1              The purpose of the grading system is to make the knowledge of the Judo player visible.
1.2              The grading system using different coloured belts to indicate progress is used in NAJA
1.3              The following system is used in NAJA and South Africa.
1.3.1        6th Kyu – White Belt
1.3.2        5th Kyu – Yellow Belt
1.3.3        4th Kyu – Orange Belt
1.3.4        3rd Kyu – Green Belt
1.3.5        2nd Kyu – Blue Belt
1.3.6        1st Kyu – Brown Belt
1.3.7        1st Dan – Black Belt
1.3.8        2nd Dan – Black Belt
1.3.9        3rd Dan – Black Belt
1.3.10    4th Dan – Black Belt
1.3.11    5th Dan – Black Belt
1.3.12    6th Dan – Red and White Blocked Belt

1.4              Grading up to the level of 2nd kyu is done at club level by qualified and approved grading masters.
1.5              It is advised that clubs do all grading up to 2nd kyu, and that grading for 1st kyu is controlled by NAJA Junior Grading Masters.
1.6              Judo South Africa controls all Dan grading.
1.7              A complete syllabus is compiled for every belt.
1.8              It is required from every candidate to give a practical demonstration of all the required techniques in order to qualify for promotion.
1.9              The Grading Commission is in charge of the whole grading network of JSA.
1.10          The Provincial Coordinator of grading is responsible for grading in his Province.
 
2.                  GRADING COORDINATORS JOB DESCRIPTION:
 
2.1              The Grading Coordinator of NAJA is in charge of the whole grading network of NAJA.
2.2              The coordinator is the mouthpiece of grading at NAJA Technical Board Meetings.
2.3              The coordinator is to keep a register of all grading done at Clubs in Natal.
2.4              The coordinator is to ensure, by visiting the Clubs, that Judoka are wearing the correct grades at all times.
2.5              It is his/her job to report back to the Technical Coordinator of NAJA.

2.6              The Grading Coordinator is elected by the Executive Committee.
2.7              It is his/her job to organize Brown and Black belt grading and courses within the Province for the Province.
 
3.                  SYLLABUS
 
3.1              KYU GRADINGS
See addendum 2 (5 pages of JSA policy document)
3.2              DAN GRADINGS
See addendum 3 (8 pages of JSA policy document)
3.3              Nage-no-kata must be done for all grading
3.4              Gonosen-no-kata for Ni dan
3.5              Katame-no-kata for San dan
3.6              Kimi-no-kata for Yon dan
3.7              Goshin-jutso for Go dan
3.8              Nage-no-kata and Katame-no-kata are fully described in the book “JUDO FORMAL TECHNIQUES”
3.9              For Gonosen-no-kata the book by KAWASHI is prescribed.
3.10          Guidelines for Kime-no-kata and Goshin-jutsu could be found in “KODOKAN JUDO”
 
4.                  GRADING REQUIREMENTS
 
4.1              Every grade has specific minimum requirements to which candidates must comply before upgrading can take place.
4.2              KYU GRADES:
4.2.1        Theoretical knowledge and practical demonstration of the Syllabus for any specific qualification is an important requirement.
4.2.2        Readiness for competition and age also are requirements for kyu grading.
4.2.3        Judoka may only grade 1 belt per year if under 16 years of age. I over 16 years, one can grade more than once a year.
4.2.4        Judoka must be registered to grade.
4.2.5        Grading Coordinator to be advised of the dates as well as name, grades and registration numbers of all Judokas that will be grading at Clubs. After the grading, names of Judoka passed must be submitted to the Coordinator who will pass them on to NAJA registrar.
4.2.6        Failure to advise Coordinator will result in non-recognition of grades.
4.2.7        Brown belt candidates must be 12 years or older.
4.2.8        Brown belt grading to be done by Grading Coordinator with assistance of Junior Dan Grading Master.
4.2.9        Brown belt grading must be done over a weekend.
4.2.10    The Coaches must send names to the Coordinator prior to the Grading and Course.
4.2.11    NAJA to award Brown Belt Certificate as soon as possible.

4.2.12    50 hrs each of Table Officiating and Refereeing at Local level must be included in the Brown belt grading.
4.2.13    Judoka must bring License Book to the Grading.
4.2.14    All Clubs are compelled to keep a grading register, which can be inspected by the Coordinator at any given time.
4.2.15    False information or incomplete forms may lead to rejection.
 
4.3              DAN GRADES
4.3.1        Sho and Ni Dan applications for Sho, Ni Dan and higher, must go through the Grading Coordinator for approval.
4.3.2        Sho, Ni Dan and higher include 100 hrs each of Table Officialing and Refereeing at Provincial Level.
 
4.4              AGE
Candidates must on the day of grading have at least the following age:
SHO DAN       -           16 YRS
NI DAN          -           18    “
SAN DAN       -           21    “
YON DAN      -           25    “
GO DAN         -           30    “
ROKU DAN   -           40    “
SICHI DAN    -           50    “
 
4.4.1        WAITING TIME BETWEEN GRADINGS
The following waiting time (in years) between Dan Grading is applicable.
SHO DAN       -           1 YR
NI DAN          -           2 YRS
SAN DAN       -           3 YRS
YON DAN      -           4 YRS
GO DAN         -           5 YRS
ROKU DAN   -           6 YRS
SICHI DAN    -           7 YRS
 
4.4.2        OTHER REQUIREMENTS
·                  Must be a licensed member of NAJA and JSA.
·                  If the candidate does not have the required points, the waiting time between grades doubles.
·                  Must also be able to act as uke at his/her grading.
·                  Must train regularly or be actively involved on Administrative level during waiting times.
·                  Uke may only be on grade higher than Tori.
·                  If Uke’s grade is higher it must be motivated in writing and be approved by the grading master.

5.                  GRADING PROCEDURES
5.1              KYU GRADES:
The proposed procedure is as follows:
·                  Clubs do all kyu and mon grades and forward the results to the Provincial Coordinator.
·                  NAJA controls all 1st kyu grading and courses.
·                  Dan grading to be done through NAJA by JSA.
5.2              GRADING FEES
·                  Must be fair for the specific area in which grading takes place.
·                  May not exceed the costs of a Sho-Dan grading.
 
5.3              DAN GRADES:
5.3.1        GRADING COURSES:
·                  A course will be annually held in a Northern Province where the finer points of the syllabus will be emphasized.
·                  It is expected that participants who enter for this course are already familiar with the relevant Kata’s and that they intend to improve themselves during the course.
·                  This course will be a JSA course and the course fee is set by the grading commission.
